Luigi in Sonic 1
Luigi in Sonic 1 - Platformer Classic
Luigi in Sonic 1 is a ROM hack for the SEGA Genesis that replaces Sonic the Hedgehog with Nintendo's Luigi from the Super Mario series. It was created by fans and shared within the ROM hacking community, most likely surfacing in the early 2000s through forums like Sonic Retro. There is no official publisher or developer; this is strictly a non-commercial modification of the original Sonic 1 code.
The gameplay follows the exact structure of Sonic the Hedgehog: you guide Luigi through Green Hill Zone and the other classic stages, collecting rings, dodging hazards, and defeating Dr. Eggman's badniks. Luigi's physics are slightly tweaked from Sonic's - he may handle differently, but the core loop of speed, platforming, and ring collection remains identical. The hack is a sprite swap, so no new levels or story elements are added.
For retro gaming enthusiasts, Luigi in Sonic 1 is a fun what‑if crossover that blends two iconic mascots. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it offers a fresh visual twist on a beloved platformer. If you enjoy seeing characters dropped into unfamiliar worlds, this simple hack is worth booting up for a few minutes of nostalgia.
How to Play Luigi in Sonic 1 Online
Getting Started
When you load Luigi in Sonic 1, the title screen will look familiar but with Luigi's face instead of Sonic's. Press Enter to start the game. The first level is Green Hill Zone, and your goal is simple: reach the end of the stage while collecting rings and avoiding enemies. Rings act as a shield - losing all rings means one hit defeats you.
Luigi controls similarly to Sonic in the original game. Use the Arrow Keys to move left and right. Press X to jump, and hold the direction while jumping to control Luigi's trajectory. Press S to perform a spin attack while rolling, which can defeat enemies and break blocks. Watch out for spikes, pits, and the zone's boss at the end of Act 3.
The core loop is the same as Sonic 1: run fast, collect rings, reach the goal. There are no new mechanics unique to this hack, so if you have played the original Sonic you'll feel right at home. Take note that Luigi's sprite may have slightly different collision compared to Sonic, but the stage layouts are unchanged.
