Heavy Nova is a pretty interesting hybrid that landed on the Sega Genesis back in 1991. In Heavy Nova, you control a robot called a Heavy DOLL through a series of 2D platforming stages. These levels are the training camp, and you jump, run, and fight through them. At the end of each stage, you face off against another Heavy DOLL in a one-on-one fighting match. So the gameplay alternates between platforming and versus combat. The goal is to earn the highest operator rank by completing the entire camp. There are mission elements too, though the exact objectives vary by stage.

Heavy Nova is a niche pick, even for Genesis collectors. Its hybrid nature makes it stand out among the many straightforward shooters and platformers of 1991. The mix of genres can feel a bit uneven, but it's a neat piece of early 90s experimentation.
