Gain Ground (World)
Gain Ground (World) on Genesis
Gain Ground first hit arcades as a top-down shooter from Sega, and this Genesis port brought the strategic mayhem home. The game dropped in the early 90s for the 16-bit generation, offering a different kind of shooter than the run-and-gun titles crowding the market. If you missed it in the arcade, this version is your chance to see what the fuss was about without pumping in quarters.
The core loop revolves around guiding a squad of soldiers through scrolling battlefields. Each character packs a unique weapon - some shoot straight, others lob grenades or fire in arcs. You control one soldier at a time while the rest wait as reserves, and you can swap between them on the fly. The goal is to wipe out every enemy on a screen before moving to the next, and picking up rescued allies adds more options to your roster. It feels more like a tactical puzzle than a pure shooter because positioning and efficient kills matter as much as reflexes.
What makes Gain Ground worth revisiting is its deliberate pacing and variety. The Genesis library is stuffed with shooters, but this one forces you to think instead of just dodge and fire. The arcade origins show in its stage-by-stage structure and the pressure to clear enemies without losing too many soldiers. It's a niche taste - deliberate, methodical, and rewarding when you master each character's quirks. If you are tired of twitch shooters, this 16-bit port offers something slower and smarter.
How to Play Gain Ground (World) Online
Getting Started
When the game boots, press Start to see the title screen and then Start again to enter the character selection. You start with a small squad of soldiers. Pick one to lead into battle - you can switch between them during a stage by pressing the Y button (Z key). The main goal is to clear all enemies from the screen. Shooting everything that moves works, but you also need to rescue any allied soldiers trapped in the level. Touching them adds them to your reserve roster.
The game scrolls horizontally and vertically as you move, revealing new enemies and obstacles. Each stage ends when every foe is eliminated. If your active soldier dies, you lose one life and automatically switch to the next in reserve. Lose all lives and its game over, but you can continue from the stage you reached by pressing Start on the game over screen. Pay attention to enemy patterns - some shoot straight, others track your position. Use the terrain and your soldiers' unique weapon ranges to stay safe.
Menus are in English if you are playing the World version, so navigation is straightforward. Experiment with different characters early to see which weapon types suit your playstyle. Some soldiers have piercing shots, others fire slow but powerful projectiles. There is no time limit, so take your time scanning each screen before moving forward.
