FIFA Soccer 97 is a football simulation that hit the Sega Genesis in 1996. Published by EA Sports and developed by Electronic Arts Canada, it is the fourth game in the long-running FIFA series. This official release came out in both North America and Europe, supporting multiple languages like English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Swedish. It's a straight-up sports title, no fancy gimmicks, built for the 16-bit console era. When you fire it up, you pick a team from a roster of national sides or club squads, then jump into a match. The core loop is simple: you control eleven players on an isometric pitch, passing, shooting, and tackling your way to victory. There are different modes like a quick friendly, a knockout tournament, or a season where you play through a full schedule. The controls let you manage through balls, slide tackles, and set pieces. The game keeps a steady pace typical of mid-90s football titles. Today, FIFA Soccer 97 is worth checking out if you want to see how the series looked before the 3D revolution. It holds up as a solid Genesis sports game, similar to International Superstar Soccer but with the official licenses. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a fun, straightforward football game that captures the feel of the time. If you're into retro sports or the FIFA lineage, it's a nice piece of history to play.

How to play FIFA Soccer 97 online

When you first start, you'll see a menu screen. Use the D-Pad to highlight options and the A button (X key) to select. You can choose a game mode: Exhibition for a single match, Tournament to compete for a cup, or Season to play through a whole league campaign. Pick your team, adjust the match length and difficulty if you want, then hit start to kick off. The core gameplay revolves around passing and moving into space. Use the D-Pad to steer your player, the A button to pass or shoot, and the B button for a through ball or harder pass. Sprint with the Y button (Z key) to outrun defenders. Defensively, you can switch players with the L shoulder (Q key) and slide tackle with the B button when close. The computer AI is fairly basic, so learn to exploit gaps with quick passes. A new player should start with Exhibition to get a feel for the controls. The game doesn't have a save feature, so finish your season or tournament in one sitting unless you write down any password codes (some modes offer them). Experiment with different teams to find one that suits your playstyle. The isometric camera can take a little getting used to, but it remains clear enough to read the action.
