Elitserien 95 is a Swedish localization of EA Sports' NHL 95, released for the Sega Genesis in Sweden around 1995. It's not a separate game but a translation that swaps the original NHL teams and players for the real teams and players from Elitserien, Sweden's top hockey league. For Swedish fans in the mid-90s, this was a rare official localisation that made the game feel much more personal than playing as generic or North American teams. You take control of one of the twelve Elitserien teams and play through a season, exhibition, or playoff mode. On the ice, the game plays exactly like NHL 95 - smooth isometric view, fast-paced action, with passing, shooting, body checking, and fighting. The control scheme is the same: a single button for pass/poke check, another for shoot/hit, and the D-pad for movement. The Swedish player names and team logos are the main difference, but the core loop of face-offs, breakouts, and scoring remains identical to its predecessor. Today, Elitserien 95 is a neat piece of regional gaming history. It offers a glimpse into how EA handled overseas markets before widespread localization became standard. For collectors, it's a sought-after variant because it's a Swedish-exclusive release that doesn't work on standard North American Genesis without a converter. If you're curious about hockey games of the era and want something more familiar if you follow Swedish hockey, it's worth a look. Just know it's not mechanically deeper than NHL 95 - it's a straight translation with a simple but effective gameplay engine.

How to play Elitserien 95 online

First, pick a mode from the main menu using the D-pad and press X (A button) to confirm. The game offers Exhibition, Season, and Playoffs. Since Elitserien 95 is essentially a translation, all menus are in Swedish, but the layout is identical to NHL 95 - you can navigate by experimenting. Select your team from the Swedish league, and before the game you can set period length and difficulty.

During a match, control whichever player has the puck when on offense, or the closest defender when on defense. Press S to shoot or hit, and X to pass or poke check. Use the D-pad to move and aim. The game uses a simple one-button-pass system - you don't control which teammate receives it; it targets the most open player. Body checking is effective but can lead to penalties. Fighting occurs after a big hit - repeatedly press the button closest to the opponent to win the scuffle and get a brief power play.

Keep an eye on the penalty box and line changes - the game auto-substitutes when a player gets tired, but you can manually change lines by pressing a specific button sequence (check the options menu). Winning a face‑off gives you possession, so practice timing your stick lift by pressing the pass button right when the puck drops. That's the core loop - win face-offs, cycle the puck, shoot, and defend. If you've played any Genesis-era NHL game, this will feel immediately familiar.

Elitserien 95 FAQ

Is Elitserien 95 an official release, a fan hack, a prototype, or another kind of build?

Elitserien 95 is an official commercial release from EA Sports, sold only in Sweden. It is a region-specific translation of NHL 95, not a fan hack or prototype. The game was produced and distributed by EA through normal retail channels.

Which regions was Elitserien 95 released in?

Elitserien 95 was released exclusively in Sweden. It was never sold in other Nordic countries or anywhere else. The cartridge itself is region-locked to the PAL/European format, meaning it will not play on a standard North American Genesis without a converter.

Is Elitserien 95 exclusive to SEGA Genesis or did it appear on other systems?

This version of Elitserien 95 was exclusive to the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive). While NHL 95 itself was released on multiple platforms (SNES, PC, etc.), the Swedish Elitserien localization was only produced for the Genesis.
