El Viento (USA)
Inside El Viento (USA)
El Viento is an action platformer that hit the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991, originally released in Japan. It was developed by Wolf Team and published by Renovation Products in North America under the 'El Viento (USA)' label. The game stands out for its female protagonist and themes drawn from Lovecraftian mythology, giving it a unique flavor compared to other platformers of the era.
You control Annet, a young woman who uses magic and a whip-like weapon to fight through horizontally scrolling stages. The core gameplay involves running, jumping, and attacking enemies while collecting power-ups that enhance your spell power or restore health. Each level ends with a boss battle against grotesque creatures inspired by cosmic horror, requiring pattern recognition and quick reflexes. There are also some light exploration elements, like finding hidden items or alternate paths.
What makes El Viento worth revisiting is its distinct atmosphere and challenging difficulty. It's not as polished as Sonic or Rocket Knight Adventures, but the Lovecraftian aesthetic and female lead were unusual for its time. If you enjoy obscure Genesis action games with a darker tone, it's a solid pick. Just be prepared for some stiff controls and trial-and-error sections that were common in early 90s platformers.
How to Play El Viento (USA) Online
When the game loads, you'll see a title screen. Press Start to begin. The first level is a straightforward city street filled with enemies. Move Annet with the D-Pad, jump over obstacles and pits with the A button, and attack with the B button. Your whip strikes straight ahead, but you can also hold B to run faster. Collect blue orbs to fill your magic meter, then press Z to unleash a screen-clearing spell when things get hectic.
Your main goal is to reach the end of each stage and defeat the boss. Watch for key items like keys or gems that unlock doors or grant extra lives. If you get hit, you lose a life; falling into pits is an instant death. The game gives you a limited number of continues, so learning enemy patterns and stage layouts is essential. Since this is the US version, menus are in English, so navigation is straightforward.
