EA Sports Double Header is a compilation cartridge that bundles two classic sports simulations onto one SEGA Genesis cart, released exclusively in Europe in 1994. Published by Electronic Arts under the EA Sports label, it pairs FIFA International Soccer and NHL 94, two of the most popular titles from the publisher's early 16-bit lineup. This is an official release, not a fan hack or mod, and it offers a convenient way to experience both games without swapping carts. The player can choose between two distinct sports experiences. In FIFA International Soccer, you control a soccer team through matches with isometric perspective, managing passes, shots, and player movement with the D-pad and buttons. In NHL 94, you play hockey in a top-down view, controlling skaters to pass, shoot, and check opponents, with simple controls that emphasize quick reflexes. Each game has its own menu and gameplay mechanics, but both share the same button layout and support up to two players via the same controller port or a multitap. For retro gaming fans, EA Sports Double Header represents a snapshot of early-90s sports gaming at its peak. Both included titles are widely praised for their accessible yet deep gameplay, and having them together makes this cartridge a neat find for collectors. It doesn't add anything new beyond the two separate games, but the convenience and the quality of the originals make it worth trying if you enjoy classic sports sims. It's a straightforward compilation that lets you jump into either game quickly.

How to play EA Sports Double Header online

Before starting a match, the game boots to a menu where you pick either FIFA International Soccer or NHL 94. Use the D-pad to highlight your choice and press Enter (Start) to confirm. In both games, the core loop involves selecting teams, setting difficulty if available, and then playing through timed matches. FIFA uses a pass-and-shoot system with the A and S buttons for different kicks, while NHL uses the same buttons for passing and shooting along with a body check. Both games support one-player vs computer or two-player head-to-head on the same controller configuration. If you are new to these titles, spend a moment in each game's practice mode (if available) to get used to the ball or puck physics. In FIFA, holding the D-pad in a direction while pressing kick directs the shot or pass. In NHL 94, the manual goalie controls add depth but are optional. The default controls are responsive, so you can jump right into a match. Because this is a compilation, there is no single overarching campaign - each game has its own season and playoff modes, accessible from their respective menus.

EA Sports Double Header FAQ

What makes EA Sports Double Header stand out among SEGA Genesis titles of its era?

It is a compilation that bundles two of EA Sports' most acclaimed 16-bit games on a single cartridge, which was a rarity for the Genesis library in Europe. Instead of offering one sport, you get both soccer and hockey, letting you switch between genres without swapping carts. This makes it an efficient choice for players who wanted variety in their sports gaming.

Does EA Sports Double Header have a multiplayer or co-op mode?

Both included games support two-player head-to-head play using the same controller port or a multitap, allowing you to compete against a friend. There is no co-op mode - both are direct competitive matches, either human vs computer or human vs human. The multiplayer experience is identical to that of the individual FIFA and NHL releases.

Is EA Sports Double Header considered easy to pick up or challenging?

Both FIFA International Soccer and NHL 94 are praised for their accessible control schemes that let new players jump in quickly, yet they offer depth for skilled players who master advanced techniques like manual passing or one-timer shots. The difficulty curve is moderate - you can win on easier settings right away but will need practice to compete on higher levels. Most players find the hockey controls slightly more intuitive than the soccer ones.
