Double Clutch

Double Clutch is a top-down racing game that came out for the SEGA Genesis in Europe during 1993. Developed by ASCII Entertainment, it is essentially a Micro Machines clone, putting you in control of a tiny car zipping around scaled-down tracks. The perspective is top-down, similar to the classic Micro Machines games that were popular on other systems at the time. It was a European exclusive release, so North American and Japanese players would have had to import it back in the day.

In Double Clutch, you race against opponents on a variety of small-scale environments. The tracks are laid out across surfaces like tabletops or living room floors, complete with obstacles and shortcuts. You steer with the D-pad and accelerate to maintain speed while navigating tight corners and avoiding hazards. The goal is simply to finish first across a set number of laps. There is also a two-player mode where you can race head-to-head against a friend, which is where the game really shines. The controls are responsive but the handling can feel a bit slippery, so you need to brake or ease off the gas before hairpins.

For retro racing fans, Double Clutch is a solid entry in the top-down racing genre on Genesis. It does not reinvent the wheel but does a decent job of mimicking the Micro Machines formula. The graphics are colorful and the tracks are varied enough to keep things interesting for a while. It is not as polished as some of the more famous racing titles on the system, but if you enjoy bite-sized arcade racing with a friend, this one is worth a look. It is a niche title that captures a specific era of couch multiplayer fun.
