DEcapAttack SRAM
Inside DEcapAttack SRAM
DEcapAttack SRAM is a ROM hack of the Sega Genesis action-platformer Decap Attack, originally released in 1991. This modified version was created by an unknown author and adds battery-backed SRAM save support to the game. It's a fan-made enhancement rather than an official release, designed to address one of the original game's biggest frustrations: the lack of a proper save system. The hack itself doesn't change the core experience, but it does make it more accessible for modern players who want to pick up where they left off.
The player controls Chuck D. Head, a green Frankenstein-like monster who attacks by detaching and throwing his own skull at enemies. The game unfolds across side-scrolling levels filled with zombies, bats, and other spooky creatures. Your main goal is to reach the end of each stage while collecting hearts to refill health and picking up special items like temporary invincibility or extra lives. The original game relied on a password system to continue progress; this hack replaces that with automatic save states stored in the cartridge's SRAM, so you can quit and resume without jotting down codes.
This title is worth checking out if you enjoy classic Genesis platformers but prefer modern convenience features. The original Decap Attack was well-regarded for its quirky art style and satisfying head-throwing mechanic, but its password system was a pain point for many players. DEcapAttack SRAM eliminates that issue, making it a more polished way to experience the same game. It's a niche improvement, but for fans of the original or anyone curious about a weird early-90s platformer, this hack is a tidy upgrade that respects the source material.
How to Play DEcapAttack SRAM Online
Getting Started
After loading DEcapAttack SRAM, press Enter to start the game. You'll begin at the first level, a graveyard filled with walking skeletons and bats. The core objective is to run to the right, dispatching enemies by throwing your head (use B button) and jumping over pits (X button). Collect green hearts to restore health and red items to gain special abilities like faster speed or temporary invincibility. The game uses a lives system - lose all lives and you'll see a game over screen, but your progress is saved automatically thanks to the SRAM patch.
Because this is a hack of the original Decap Attack, the gameplay loop is unchanged: explore each stage, find the boss at the end, defeat it, and move on. The SRAM save activates at specific checkpoints or when you exit the game via the menu. You don't need to do anything special - just close the browser or emulator, and your position will be restored next time you load the ROM. This is a welcome improvement over the original password-based save method.
New players should know that the game has a mild difficulty curve. Early enemies are slow, but later chapters introduce projectile-shooting foes and tricky platform sections. The head-throwing attack has a short range, so get comfortable with the timing. Use the D-Pad to control movement and jump on enemies to stun them before attacking if you prefer not to trade blows. The SRAM save means you can experiment freely without losing progress.
