What is Classic Collection (Europe)?
Classic Collection is a compilation that bundles the four main Sonic the Hedgehog platform games originally released for the Sega Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994), and Sonic & Knuckles (1994). Though this particular collection saw release on the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega, the games themselves are pure Genesis-era titles. For the purposes of this entry, you are playing those original Genesis ROMs as part of the compilation on the Genesis platform.
What you do in Classic Collection is select and play through any of the four classic platformers. Each game follows Sonic the Hedgehog as he runs through loop-de-loop-filled levels, collects rings, defeats enemies by rolling into them or spin-dashing, and aims to reach the end of each stage while avoiding spikes, pits, and water hazards. The core mechanics include speed-based platforming, multiple pathways, and special stages to collect Chaos Emeralds. Sonic & Knuckles also includes lock-on technology that lets you play Sonic 3 as Knuckles or even combine with Sonic 2 for additional content.
Today, Classic Collection offers a convenient way to experience four of the most iconic platformers from the 16-bit era in one package. How to Play Classic Collection (Europe) Online
Getting Started
When you first launch the Classic Collection, you will be presented with a menu listing the four games: Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. Choose a game with the arrow keys and press Enter to start. Most titles begin with a simple title screen; press Start again to jump into Green Hill Zone or equivalent first level.
The core loop is straightforward: run to the right, defeat badniks, gather rings, and reach the Goal Plate at the end of each act. Rings protect you from one hit (losing all rings upon damage) and you can enter special stages by collecting enough rings at a checkpoint. Spin dash (press down then jump while holding down) lets you accelerate from a standstill. Experiment with each Sonic character's unique abilities - Sonic has the spin dash, Tails can fly, and Knuckles can glide and climb.
If you are playing Sonic & Knuckles, you can also connect it to the other cartridges in the original hardware - but in this emulated version, the lock-on features are simulated automatically when you select the appropriate game from the menu. For example, playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles combines both games into one seamless adventure. Take your time exploring multiple paths in each zone; the different heights and routes reward experimentation.
