Beauty and the Beast - Belle's Quest (USA)
Getting to Know Beauty and the Beast - Belle's Quest (USA)
Beauty and the Beast - Belle's Quest is a side-scrolling action game that came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993. It was published by Sunsoft as part of a pair of games based on the Disney animated film, with its counterpart being the more combat-focused Beauty and the Beast: Roar of the Beast. This title was released only in North America and is less commonly discussed than many other Disney-licensed Genesis games, but it holds a niche as a gentler, exploration-driven take on the movie's setting.
In Belle's Quest you control Belle as she navigates the Beast's castle and its grounds. The core gameplay involves running, jumping, and interacting with enchanted objects to solve simple puzzles and gather items. Instead of fighting enemies, Belle uses a perfume bottle to stun or scare away hostile creatures like wolves and bats, and she can also pick up storybook pages that unlock new areas. The game is structured around helping characters such as Cogsworth and Lumiere, progressing through a series of levels that represent different parts of the castle.
For its era, Belle's Quest is a straightforward and family-friendly platformer that leans heavily on the film's atmosphere and charm. It lacks the complexity or challenge of tougher Genesis action games, making it more of a curiosity for collectors or fans of the movie rather than a must-play. If you enjoy Disney-licensed games from the early 90s or want to see a rare example of Sunsoft's output on the system, it's worth a short session to appreciate its art style and music, even if the gameplay feels dated today.
How to Play Beauty and the Beast - Belle's Quest (USA) Online
Getting Started
When you start the game, you'll see a title screen and a brief story setup. Press Enter to begin. The first level places Belle outside the castle gates. Your immediate goal is to move right, jumping over gaps and avoiding a few simple obstacles, until you reach the castle entrance. Talk to the enchanted objects by walking up to them and pressing X; they will give you hints or request help.
The main objective is to collect storybook pages scattered across each level. These pages unlock the path forward and eventually let you reach the Beast's room. Along the way you'll encounter items like hearts and potion refills. Use the perfume bottle (press S) to stun enemies temporarily. There are no lives; you can take damage and continue as long as your health bar is not depleted. If you lose all health, you restart at the beginning of the current area.
Exploration is rewarded, but the game is linear overall. Pay attention to what characters say - sometimes they ask you to find a specific object before a door will open. The game is not very long, and it's easier than most Genesis platformers. If you get stuck, try backtracking to earlier screens, as a new page might have appeared after a conversation.
