Getting Started

When you start Art of Fighting on Genesis, you're first asked to choose between single-player, two-player versus, or a watch mode. Pick single-player to begin the arcade ladder. You select your fighter from a roster of six characters, each with their own fighting style and super moves. The game then throws you into a series of matches against AI opponents, each with increasing difficulty.

The basic gameplay revolves around movement, attacking, and blocking. Use the D-Pad to move left and right, crouch, and jump. The A button jumps, B attacks, and you can combine directions with button presses to execute special moves like the Ko'ou Ken or Haoh Shokoken. A key mechanic is the super gauge at the bottom of the screen - it fills when you hit or get hit, and once full, you can press a button combo to unleash a powerful super move. Try to manage your super gauge and learn the timing of your character's best moves to win matches.

If you're new to the game, start with the tutorial hints displayed before fights and practice blocking and basic combos. The Genesis version uses a simplified control scheme compared to the Neo Geo, so special move inputs are a bit more forgiving. Don't be afraid to experiment - the game rewards aggressive play but punishes reckless rushing. For versus mode, grab a friend and take turns on the same keyboard or controller emulation.
