Alien Storm (World): Genesis Beat em Up
Alien Storm is an arcade-style beat-em-up originally developed by Sega, following in the footsteps of their better-known Golden Axe series. This Genesis port arrived in 1991, bringing the coin-op action home for players in Japan, North America, and Europe. The game puts you in control of one of three characters, each with their own strengths, as you battle through waves of alien invaders across various stages.
Gameplay sticks to the classic side-scrolling beat-em-up formula: move left and right, fight enemies with punches and kicks, and use special attacks that drain a shared energy bar. You can also pick up weapons dropped by foes, like guns and flamethrowers, to mix up your approach. Between action segments, there are first-person shooting galleries where you blast aliens from a fixed perspective. The goal is simple: survive each level and take down the boss waiting at the end.
While Alien Storm doesn't reach the same iconic status as Golden Axe, it's a competent and fun title that fans of the genre should check out. The Genesis version is a solid port, retaining the arcade's frantic pace and colorful sprite work. It's on the shorter side, but the two-player co-op mode adds good replay value. If you enjoy early 90s brawlers with a sci-fi twist, this one is worth your time.
How to Play Alien Storm (World) Online
Getting Started
When you start Alien Storm, press Start (Enter) to move past the title screen. If you're playing alone, you'll pick a character from the three available: each one has different speed and attack power. The basic loop is straightforward: move right through each stage, fight every alien that appears, and collect health items or weapons to help you survive. Special attacks are powerful but consume a limited energy meter shown on screen, so use them wisely.
During certain parts of the game, the perspective shifts to a first-person view where you aim your crosshair with the D-Pad and shoot at oncoming aliens. Keep an eye out for destructible objects that might drop bonuses. The game ends when you run out of lives, but you can continue by pressing Start. Co-op play follows the same rules, but both players share the screen and fight together.
Since the menus are in English, navigation is easy. There's no deep strategy required: just keep moving, attack aggressively, and don't let enemies surround you. The game is short enough that you can finish it in one sitting with practice.
