Alien Soldier (Europe)
About Alien Soldier (Europe)
Alien Soldier hit the Sega Genesis in Europe back in 1995, developed by Treasure and published by Sega. It's a blistering action game that pushes the hardware to its absolute limits - the title screen actually brags about it. If you've played other Treasure titles like Gunstar Heroes or Radiant Silvergun, you'll recognize that signature arcade intensity here, but this one strips things down to pure boss-rush combat.
There's no wandering through levels or fighting regular enemies. You face one powerful boss after another, each with distinct attack patterns and weak points. Your character can run, jump, shoot in multiple directions, and use a charge attack. The focus is on pattern recognition and split-second reactions. Every encounter feels like a puzzle where you learn the boss's tells and find the right moment to strike.
What makes Alien Soldier worth playing today is how tight and focused it is. It's not a long game - you can finish it in under an hour once you know what you're doing - but mastering each boss takes real skill. For fans of Treasure's other work or anyone who loves challenging action games from the 16-bit era, this is a gem. Just be ready to die a lot and hit restart.
How to Play Alien Soldier (Europe) Online
When you start Alien Soldier, you'll see a title screen advertising that it pushes the Genesis to its limits. Press Start to move to a mode select screen. Choose "1P Game" or "Time Attack" using the D-Pad and confirm with X (A button). The game tosses you directly into the first boss fight - there are no stages or regular enemies in the traditional sense.
Your goal is simple: survive and destroy each boss. Move with the D-Pad, shoot with S (B button), and jump with X (A button). You can also aim diagonally and hold S to build a charge shot. Pay attention to each boss's tells - they telegraph attacks before they happen. Your health bar is at the top, and you can restore some health by collecting small orbs that certain bosses drop when hit.
The core loop is learn, die, restart, improve. There is no save system in the original cartridge, but the emulator may offer save states. Use them if you want, but part of the challenge is memorizing patterns and executing without checkpoints. If you get stuck, try watching videos of the boss you are facing - the solution is always rhythmic and intentional.
