What is Yuu Yuu Hakusho !?

Yuu Yuu Hakusho ! is a strategy game for the NEC PC Engine CD, released exclusively in Japan in 1994. It adapts the popular Yu Yu Hakusho anime into a turn-based tactical format, a departure from the fighting games the series is more commonly associated with on other consoles. This was an official commercial release, not a hack or fan project, though it remains a niche title even among PC Engine enthusiasts. Players take on the role of Yusuke Urameshi and his friends, moving units across a grid-based map to defeat opponents. Battles are turn-based, with each character having unique abilities drawn from the anime. You manage a small team, positioning them for attacks and using special moves that require spirit energy. The campaign follows the story arc of the Dark Tournament, though the exact mission structure is typical of the genre. If you're curious about how the anime's world translates to strategy rather than action, this is a unique entry. It's not flashy or fast-paced, but it rewards careful planning and offers a different take on the source material. The PC Engine CD's sound quality gives the game a decent audio backdrop, but the lack of an English release means you will need to navigate Japanese menus. Worth trying if you are a fan of both the anime and early '90s strategy titles.

How to play Yuu Yuu Hakusho ! online

Getting Started

When you start Yuu Yuu Hakusho !, you will first see a title screen. Press Start (Enter) to proceed. Menus are entirely in Japanese, so you may need to experiment or use a translation guide. The main options are likely new game, continue, and settings. Select new game using the D-Pad and confirm with X (A button).

The game begins with a brief story scene, then puts you on a strategy map. Your units are represented by sprites on a grid. Use the D-Pad to move a cursor over your characters and press X to select them. A menu will appear with options like move, attack, and special moves. Movement is turn-based; after each action, press B (S) to end the turn or pass to the next unit. The goal of each stage is to defeat all enemy units or meet a specific condition.

Keep an eye on your characters' spirit energy (shown on a gauge) - special moves consume it. If you run out, your attacks will be limited. The computer enemy is fairly straightforward but can exploit weaknesses if you rush. Take your time, position your team, and use healing items if available. Save often using the in-game save feature (likely in the menu) since there are no mid-level checkpoints.
