Super Darius
Getting to Know Super Darius
Super Darius is a horizontal shoot 'em up released for the NEC PC Engine CD in 1993, published by Taito and exclusive to Japan. It is a port of the 1987 arcade classic Darius, brought to the CD-ROM format with enhanced visuals and a redbook audio soundtrack. This version retains the core shooting action but upgrades the presentation with CD-quality music and voice samples, making it a notable entry in the early CD-based console library.
How to Play Super Darius Online
Getting Started
When the game boots, you are greeted with a title screen and a menu in Japanese. Press Enter (Start) to begin. You control the Silver Hawk, a small fighter ship, flying from left to right across each stage. The goal is to survive each area by shooting down enemy fish-themed ships and avoiding their attacks. Power-up capsules appear from destroyed enemies - collect them to upgrade your weapons and shield.
The core loop is straightforward: blast through waves of enemies, dodge projectiles, and face a boss at the end of each zone. The PC Engine CD version features branching paths - after certain stages you can choose which route to take, altering the difficulty and boss encounters. Keep an eye on your shield gauge; getting hit reduces it, and losing all shields costs a life. There are no continues by default, so practice positioning and memorizing patterns. The CD audio adds dramatic music that changes with each zone, so don't mute it on your first play.
