What is Psychic Storm?
Psychic Storm is a vertically scrolling shooter that came out in 1992 for the NEC PC Engine Super CD-ROM². It was published by Laser Soft, a studio that put out a handful of shooters and action games for the platform during the early 90s. This one made use of the CD format's larger storage, which allowed for redbook audio and some visual flair that you wouldn't get from a HuCard release.
You pilot a small ship through a series of stages, blasting enemy formations while dodging a steady stream of bullets and obstacles. Power-ups appear from destroyed foes, letting you upgrade your weapon or add satellite options that fire alongside you. The screen scrolls upward automatically, and the action keeps moving at a brisk pace. Boss fights cap off each level and require pattern recognition to survive.
For a PC Engine shooter, Psychic Storm is a solid but not exceptional entry. The CD audio gives it an atmospheric edge, and the difficulty curve is fair for fans of the genre. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it delivers exactly what you'd expect from a 1992 vertical shooter on this hardware. How to Play Psychic Storm Online
Getting Started
After the title screen, press Start to begin. The first stage starts immediately with your ship at the bottom of the screen. Enemies fly in from above and the sides, and you need to shoot them down while avoiding their bullets. Collect the power-up icons that drop from certain enemies to increase your firepower or add options that follow your ship.
The core loop is straightforward: clear each stage by reaching the boss, defeat it, and move on. There is no story text or tutorial; the game throws you right into the action. Since this is a Japanese release, all menus and text are in Japanese. On the title screen, the only selectable option is likely "Start" or "Continue" - pressing the Start button works. The rest of the interface is minimal, so language is not a barrier to playing.
Dying resets your power-ups to the basic shot, so try to avoid losing lives by staying mobile and learning enemy patterns. There are no continues by default, but you can use the Select button to access a menu if available. Master the stages and you'll see the ending after the final boss.
