About Blood Gear

Blood Gear is a side-scrolling action game released for the NEC PC Engine CD. It came out in the mid-1990s, a period when the platform was known for its CD-ROM titles that pushed the hardware with animated cutscenes and redbook audio. The game was released only in Japan, and its publisher and developer are not widely documented in English sources. It is not a hack or fan game, but an official commercial release, though its precise origin details remain obscure to Western retro collectors. The player controls a character through horizontally scrolling stages, fighting enemies and facing bosses. The core gameplay involves moving, attacking, and dodging, with a health bar and limited continues. While the exact mechanics are not thoroughly recorded, the game follows the conventions of 16-bit action games of the era, offering straightforward run-and-gun style combat. The CD format allows for animated cutscenes and a soundtrack that takes advantage of the PC Engine CD's audio capabilities. Today, Blood Gear is a niche title that appeals to collectors of obscure PC Engine CD games. It does not have the fame of the system's top-tier action titles, but its rarity and the platform's dedicated fanbase give it a place in retrospectives of the console's library. For players curious about Japanese-exclusive CD action games from the mid-90s, it offers a glimpse into a lesser-known corner of the PC Engine catalog, though it is not a genre-defining classic.

How to play Blood Gear online

Getting Started

Since Blood Gear is a Japanese-only release, the menus and on-screen text are in Japanese. At the title screen, press Start to proceed. You will likely see options like New Game, Continue, and Options using Japanese characters. If you cannot read the language, the first option is usually New Game. Select it and confirm with the A button (X key).

The game is a side-scrolling action title. Your character moves left and right, jumps, and attacks enemies. The core loop is to advance through each stage, defeat all foes, and survive until the level boss. You have a weapon and a health bar. Collect any power-ups or items that appear, though without translation you may need to experiment to understand their effects. The game uses a lives and continues system typical of the era.

If you get stuck, remember that patterns often repeat. Study enemy movement and boss attack sequences. The CD audio provides background music but no voice guidance. Practice the jump timing and attack range. If you lose all lives, you may see a game over screen where you can continue from a checkpoint. Use the Select key (V) to possibly access in-game menus or pause.
