Black Hole Assault
Inside Black Hole Assault
Black Hole Assault is a one-on-one fighting game that originally debuted on the Sega CD in 1992, developed and published by Micronet. The version here is for the NEC PC Engine CD, bringing the sequel to Micronet's earlier Heavy Nova to a different platform. As a launch title for the Sega CD in North America, it helped showcase the system's capabilities, and its appearance on the PC Engine CD introduces it to another audience of classic hardware enthusiasts.
How to Play Black Hole Assault Online
Getting started: Select a fighter from the roster and step into the arena. The core loop involves reading your opponent's patterns and landing attacks while managing your own energy and special meter. Each character has unique moves, including projectiles and close-range strikes, so experiment to find a style that works.
Matches are best-of-three rounds, and you can play against the computer or a second player. Practice mode is available to learn combos and timing. If playing the Japanese version, menu options like "1P VS COM" or "VS 2P" are straightforward, though other menus may require some trial and error or a guide.
Pay attention to the energy bar near the top of the screen - it depletes as you take damage and also powers your special attacks. Blocking reduces damage but leaves you vulnerable to throws. Mastering movement and spacing is key to success.
