Golvellius
What is Golvellius?
Golvellius is an action role-playing game developed and published by Compile for the Japanese MSX home computer. It originally hit shelves in 1987, making it one of the earlier action RPGs on the platform. The full title is Maou Golvellius, and it was designed to take advantage of the MSX1's graphical and audio capabilities. Compile later created a visually richer remake for the MSX2 in 1988, titled Shin Maou Golvellius, but this original release remains a distinct experience on the MSX1.
In Golvellius, you guide a protagonist through an overworld map filled with forests, caves, and towns. The core loop involves exploring the overworld, talking to villagers for hints, and venturing into dungeon areas where combat happens in real time. The game uses a top-down perspective for exploration, and you attack enemies by swinging your sword or using items you find. There is a simple leveling system that increases your stats as you defeat foes, and you must manage health by collecting hearts or using potions. The progression is nonlinear to a degree, but key items often block certain paths until you complete specific dungeons.
For retro gaming fans, Golvellius is worth trying because it represents an ambitious early attempt at blending Zelda-like exploration with RPG character growth on the MSX1. It is not as polished as later entries in the genre, but it has a certain charm and historical importance. The game was also a precursor to the more widely known Sega Master System version, which shares the same core design but features different map layouts. If you enjoy classic action RPGs from the 8-bit era and want to see what Compile achieved before their later hits, this is a solid pick.
How to Play Golvellius Online
Getting Started: Your first goal in Golvellius is to leave the starting town and head toward the overworld. Talk to the old man in the town center to receive a sword, then equip it using the menu. The game uses a real-time combat system, so you can swing your sword with the B button (S). Exploration is key: roam the overworld map, enter caves and dungeons, and fight slimes, bats, and other monsters. Defeated enemies drop hearts to restore health and sometimes items.
Because this is a Japanese-only release, the menu text is in Japanese. However, you can still navigate by memory: pressing V (Select) opens the menu, where you can equip weapons or use items. The first dungeon entrance is marked by a large building on the overworld. As you progress, you will find keys that open locked doors and special boots that let you walk on water. The core loop is simple: talk to NPCs for hints, clear dungeons to obtain orbs or relics, and defeat the final boss to finish the game. Stick with it if you get stuck, as the difficulty is moderate but fair.
