Oh Shit!
Oh Shit! - Arcade Classic
Oh Shit! is a 1984 Pac-Man clone for the MSX home computer, developed by The ByteBusters and published by Aackosoft as part of their Classics range of arcade knockoffs. The game's title is a dead giveaway of its main gimmick: when you lose a life, the computer plays a digitized sample of someone saying 'Oh Shit!' - a novelty that was pretty audacious for the time. It was released exclusively in Europe, where Aackosoft had a strong presence in the MSX market.
The gameplay is almost pixel-for-pixel the same as Pac-Man. You guide a yellow, round character through a simple maze, eating dots while avoiding four colored ghosts. Power pellets let you turn the tables and eat ghosts for a short time. The maze layout and ghost behavior mirror the original arcade hit exactly. The only major difference is that audio: every death triggers that explicit speech sample, which was unusual for a home computer game in 1984.
Today Oh Shit! is mostly a curiosity, but it has a certain charm for retro collectors and fans of obscure MSX titles. It doesn't try to improve on Pac-Man; it just clones it faithfully and adds that one memorable flourish. If you've played through every official Pac-Man port and want to hear an MSX scream a curse word at you, this is your game. It's simple, short, and unapologetically derivative, but the digitized speech gives it a personality that a lot of other clones lack.
How to Play Oh Shit! Online
Getting Started
When the game loads, you'll see the classic Pac-Man maze and your character in the center. Use the arrow keys to move him around. The goal is to eat every dot in the maze to advance to the next level. There are four ghosts that chase you - touching one costs a life and triggers the 'Oh Shit!' sound clip. In the corners of the maze you'll find larger power pellets; eat one to make the ghosts turn blue and vulnerable for a few seconds, allowing you to eat them for bonus points.
The core loop is straightforward: clear the maze of dots, avoid ghosts, and use power pellets strategically. The maze layout and ghost AI are direct copies of Pac-Man, so if you've played that, you know exactly what to expect. There are no extra mechanics, no items, no story - just pure maze chase action with a profane exclamation when you mess up.
Since this is a European release, all menus and on-screen text are in English. The title screen is simple: press Enter or Space to start. There are no difficulty settings or options to worry about. Just dive in and see how many levels you can clear before those ghosts catch you.
