Lode Runner 1
Lode Runner 1: MSX1 Puzzle
Lode Runner 1 on the MSX 1 is the classic puzzle-platformer originally conceived by Brøderbund. This version brought the game's addictive level-based design to Japan's popular home computer system in the early 1980s. It's the same core experience that made the series a staple: run, climb ladders, and collect gold while outsmarting pursuing enemies.
You control a runner who must gather all the gold bars in each stage. The trick is that you can dig temporary holes in the ground to trap or evade the guards that chase you. Once they fall in, they shuffle off but eventually climb out. You need to plan routes, use ladders and bars, and time your digs carefully. There are over 150 levels in the original, each with a fresh layout and new puzzles.
For retro gamers, Lode Runner 1 on MSX is a faithful port that captures the clever, brain-teasing action of the original. It's not flashy, but the satisfying mix of platforming and puzzle solving holds up well. If you enjoy games that make you think a few steps ahead, this one is worth revisiting. The MSX library has plenty of action titles, but Lode Runner stands out for its pure, methodical challenge.
How to Play Lode Runner 1 Online
Getting Started
When you boot Lode Runner 1, you'll see a title screen. Press Enter to start. The game begins on level 1, a simple grid of platforms, ladders, and gold bars. Your goal is to collect every gold bar on the screen. Use the arrow keys to move left/right and climb ladders up/down. Press X to dig a hole in the ground to your left or right - this is your main tool to stop the pursuing enemies.
The core loop is straightforward: survey the level, plan a path to gather all gold without getting caught. Enemies move in patterns, but they will chase you if you're near. Dig a hole under them (dig when they are directly above you) to trap them temporarily, then run past. Once you collect all gold, a ladder appears leading to the next level. If you get caught, you lose a life and restart the level.
There are no in-game instructions, but the gameplay is intuitive. The manual or online guides can help with advanced strategies like using holes to block enemies permanently with clever timing. Because this is the MSX version, menus are in English, so navigation is easy. Just jump into the first level and start experimenting.
