Lode Runner 2
Lode Runner 2 Overview
Lode Runner 2 on MSX 1 is a puzzle-platformer that came out in the mid-80s, part of the long-running Lode Runner series originally created by Brøderbund. This MSX version was published exclusively in Japan, as far as I know, and it's one of the many ports that brought the gold-collecting, enemy-dodging action to home computers of the era. The exact developer for this specific MSX release isn't widely documented, but it follows the same blueprint that made the original a classic.
You control the Lode Runner through a series of single-screen levels, each filled with gold bars to collect and patrolling enemies who try to catch you. The core trick is that you can dig holes in the floor to trap or slow down enemies, but they can also climb out if you don't act fast. Every level requires you to grab all the gold while avoiding or outsmarting the red-suited guards. There's no scrolling - each stage is a contained arena with ladders, ropes, and platforms, making it a pure logic and timing challenge.
For MSX 1 owners back then, Lode Runner 2 was a solid addition to the system's library. It's not flashy or groundbreaking, but the tight level design and simple yet deep mechanics keep it engaging even today. If you're into retro puzzle games that reward patience and clever movement, this is worth checking out. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it refines a proven formula that still holds up.
How to Play Lode Runner 2 Online
Getting started: Boot up the game and you'll see a title screen in Japanese. Press Start on the title screen to move to the level select or begin from the first stage (it varies by version). Use the arrow keys to move your character left, right, up, and down ladders. Press X to jump over holes or enemies. Use the S button to run faster, which helps when you need to dig a hole quickly.
Your goal on each stage is to collect all the gold bars scattered around. Enemies will chase you, so you can dig a hole by pressing a direction while standing on a solid block - this creates a pit that enemies fall into. But be careful: enemies can climb out if you walk over the spot, and you can also fall into your own pits. Plan your path carefully, because if you touch an enemy you lose a life. Levels are small but tricky, and the game continues until you run out of lives.
If the menus are in Japanese, look for an option that says スタート (start) or a number to choose levels. The core loop is simple: enter a stage, grab gold, avoid guards, reach a ladder or exit (if there is one) after collecting all gold. Practice digging in different directions to get comfortable with the controls. It's a game of pattern recognition and quick reflexes.
