Lode Runner (J) [M]
Lode Runner (J) [M] Overview
This is the WonderSwan version of Lode Runner, a classic puzzle-platformer originally released on home computers in 1983. It was created by Doug Smith and first published by Broderbund. This Japanese port brings the addictive gameplay to Bandai's handheld, keeping the same core mechanics that made the original a landmark title. The (J) [M] designation indicates this is the Japanese release, possibly a modified or multi-language edition, but the gameplay remains true to the source material.
Players control a character who must collect all the gold pieces scattered across each grid-based level. Enemy guards patrol the area, and you can use your shovel to dig holes in the floor, trapping them temporarily. You can also climb ladders and traverse ropes to navigate the multi-tiered stages. Once all gold is collected, an escape ladder appears leading to the next level. The challenge lies in planning your route and using the environment to outsmart enemies without getting caught.
This WonderSwan port is a fantastic way to experience a timeless classic on a portable system. The pick-up-and-play design fits the handheld perfectly, and the level editor from the original is said to be included, though I'm not certain of its implementation here. If you enjoy puzzle games with a focus on strategy and timing, Lode Runner holds up remarkably well. It may not have the graphical flair of later titles, but the gameplay remains as satisfying as ever.
How to Play Lode Runner (J) [M] Online
Getting Started:
When you start Lode Runner on WonderSwan, you'll be greeted by a title screen. Press Start to begin. The menus are in Japanese, but navigation is straightforward - use the D-pad to highlight options and press A to confirm. Select "Game Start" (or the first option) to begin playing from level one.
The core loop is simple: move your character through each level collecting all the gold bars while avoiding the patrolling enemies. You can climb ladders, walk along ropes, and dig holes in the brick floors. Digging is your primary tool - enemies will fall into holes and be temporarily immobilized, giving you time to escape or collect gold. Press the B button to dig on the tile you are standing on.
A key tip for new players is to never rush. Watch enemy patterns and plan your route. Digging a hole at the right moment can save you from a chase. If an enemy falls in a hole, it will eventually climb out, so use that window wisely. The exit ladder appears only after collecting all gold. Levels get progressively harder, but failure only sends you back to the start of the current level. No save feature exists here - you'll need to complete levels in one sitting or use passwords if available.
