WWF Betrayal (USA, Europe)
About WWF Betrayal (USA, Europe)
WWF Betrayal hit the Game Boy Color in 2001, arriving in both the USA and Europe. This isn't a wrestling simulator despite the WWF license - it's a straightforward side-scrolling beat 'em up. The game puts you in control of a roster of WWE Superstars from that era, but the action is pure arcade brawling rather than grappling matches. If you're expecting a wrestling game, the title can be misleading; this is a punch-and-kick street fight through linear levels. It was published by THQ, the go-to publisher for WWF handheld games at the time, though the developer isn't widely credited in most casual sources.
How to Play WWF Betrayal (USA, Europe) Online
Getting Started
When you start WWF Betrayal, you first pick a wrestler from the selection screen. Each character has a different mix of speed and power, but the core gameplay is identical for everyone: walk left or right through a 2D level and beat up all the enemies that appear. The A button jumps, the B button attacks, and you can combine them for special moves like flying attacks or throws. The goal of each stage is to clear out every opponent and reach the exit.
The action is simple but has a few tricks. You can grab enemies, then press attack to throw them or jump to perform a grapple move. Power-ups like health and extra lives appear when you beat certain enemies. There's no block button, so you have to rely on timing and spacing to avoid getting hit. Each stage ends with a boss fight (often another wrestler from the roster), and after beating the boss, you move to the next location. The game has a handful of levels, and once you finish them all, you see an ending and can start over on a harder difficulty if you want.
One important thing to note: this is a beat 'em up, not a wrestling match. Don't expect pinfalls or rope-breaks. Your only objective is to reduce each enemy's health to zero. The controls are responsive for a GBC game, and the action moves at a good pace. Just pick a character, start tapping the attack button, and learn when to jump in and when to back off.
