VS Lemmings (Japan)
VS Lemmings (Japan): GBC Puzzle
VS Lemmings (Japan) is a puzzle game for the Game Boy Color, released exclusively in Japan. It is a version of the classic Lemmings formula that introduces a competitive versus mode, allowing two players to race or challenge each other. The game came out during the late era of the Game Boy Color, when puzzle titles were common on handhelds, and it expands on the single-player focus of the original Lemmings by adding head-to-head play.
You guide groups of small, green-haired creatures called lemmings through hazardous levels, assigning them skills like digging, climbing, or blocking to reach the exit. In VS mode, two players work (or sabotage) on split screens, each trying to save more lemmings or complete objectives first. The core loop involves pausing the action, assigning orders, then watching the lemmings follow them - often with chaotic results if you mess up. The Japanese version uses text menus, so some trial and error may be needed if you do not read Japanese.
VS Lemmings is worth a look for puzzle fans who enjoy the original Leeming concept and want a portable experience with a competitive twist. It is not a revolution of the genre, but the versus mode adds a fun layer that was rare on the Game Boy Color. Be aware that menus are in Japanese, but once you learn the symbols, the gameplay is straightforward. It is a niche but charming addition to any puzzle collection.
How to Play VS Lemmings (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up VS Lemmings, you will see a title screen. Press Start to advance. The main menu is in Japanese, but the options are usually ordered: Single-Player mode (often the first choice), VS mode (likely the second), and perhaps an options menu. For single-player, select the top option. You will then pick a level from a grid. Use the D-Pad to highlight a level and press X (A button) to confirm.
In each level, your goal is to lead a set number of lemmings from their entrance to the exit. You do this by pausing the action (press X or S?) and selecting a skill for a lemming (like digger, climber, blocker). After unpausing, that lemming will use the skill. You have a limited number of each skill and a time limit. Experiment to figure out the right sequence. The game autosaves progress as you clear levels.
If you want to try VS mode, select the second menu option. You will need a second player on the same Game Boy (or via link cable on original hardware, but emulated with two instances). Each player controls their own screen. The rules and objectives are the same as single-player, but you are racing the opponent. Since the interface is all Japanese, you may need to test buttons to find the pause/assign keys. Typically, B button (S) cancels or skips, and Start pauses. Good luck!
