Inside Test Drive Le Mans

Test Drive Le Mans is an officially licensed racing game that came out for the Game Boy Color around the year 2000. It's part of the long-running Test Drive series, but instead of street racing or police chases, this entry focuses on the famous 24-hour endurance event at Le Mans, France. The cartridge includes English, French, and Spanish language options, which was a nice touch for a handheld title of that era. While the developer and publisher aren't widely listed in casual sources, the game carries the Test Drive branding and was released during the peak of the GBC's library, when racing games were a staple on the system but few attempted to simulate real-world endurance racing. You take control of licensed Le Mans prototype cars and race around the Circuit de la Sarthe. The gameplay is an arcade-style take on the endurance format - you complete laps, manage tire wear and fuel consumption by visiting the pits, and try to finish as high as possible over the full race distance. The GBC's screen resolution means the track scrolls in a top-down or behind-car view, depending on the mode. The core loop involves accelerating through straights, braking properly for corners, and keeping the car on the asphalt. There's no story or characters - it's all about the race itself. The endurance aspect means you need to balance speed with conservation, unlike a typical quick-race handheld racer. For a GBC racing fan, Test Drive Le Mans offers something a bit different from the usual Mario Kart-style or simple arcade sprinters. The endurance theme and licensed cars give it a more serious tone, though the hardware limitations keep the experience closer to a simplified simulation than a hardcore sim. It's a niche title that stands out because very few handheld games tried to model pit strategies and long races back then. If you enjoy racing games from that period and want to try something that feels more like a real motorsport event than a flashy arcade game, this is worth a go. Just don't expect any deep career modes or extra content beyond the race itself.

How to play Test Drive Le Mans online

Getting Started When you start Test Drive Le Mans, you'll see a menu where you can choose your car and race mode. The main attraction is the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, but there might be a quick race option too. Use the D-Pad to navigate menus and the A button (X key) to confirm selections. Once you pick a car and track configuration, you'll be placed on the starting grid. The goal is to complete as many laps as possible within the time limit or to finish first after a set number of laps. The core gameplay involves accelerating with the A button and braking with the B button while steering left and right. Watch your speed - driving too fast into corners will cause you to spin out or crash. After a few laps, your tires will wear down and your fuel will run low. When that happens, drive into the pit lane (usually at the end of the lap) and stop in your pit box. The game handles refueling and tire changes automatically during the pit stop, so you just wait a few seconds and then accelerate back onto the track. Managing your pit stops well is key to winning the race. There's no manual shifting - it's an automatic transmission game, so you only worry about steering and throttle/brake control. If you are new to the game, start on easy difficulty to get a feel for the track layout and braking points before tackling the full endurance race.
