Sakura Taisen GB2 - Thunderbolt Sakusen

Sakura Taisen GB2 - Thunderbolt Sakusen is a strategy RPG that blends tactical battles with light adventure and relationship-building elements. Released in Japan in 2001 for the Game Boy Color, this is the second handheld entry in the Sakura Taisen series, originally developed by Sega and Red Company. The game is a direct sequel to the first Game Boy Color Sakura Taisen title and retains the series' signature mix of turn-based combat and visual novel-style dialogue sequences. It was never released outside Japan, so playing it today requires either importing or emulation. The core gameplay divides into two main phases: adventure sections where you talk to characters, explore environments, and make choices that affect relationships and story outcomes, and battle sections where you command a squad of steampunk-themed mecha (called Kobu) in turn-based tactical fights. Each character has unique abilities and upgrading their affection level unlocks stronger attacks. Between missions, you manage resources and develop your team. The game uses a simple but effective interface that works well on the Game Boy Color's small screen, though all menus and text are in Japanese, which can be a barrier for non-readers. For fans of the Sakura Taisen series, this Game Boy Color entry captures the same charm and strategic depth found in the console versions, albeit with simpler graphics and a slightly condensed scope. It's a solid portable adaptation that stands on its own, offering a complete story with multiple endings based on your choices and relationships. If you enjoy tactical RPGs with strong character interaction and don't mind the language hurdle, this is a worthwhile title to explore. It also serves as a good time capsule of how developers shrunk complex console experiences down to handheld form without losing their identity.
