Getting Started

Start a new game and you'll be thrown into the familiar world of Johto, but right away you'll notice something is off: the Pokemon you encounter have completely swapped types from the original games. A Pidgey might be part Psychic, a Geodude part Dark, and so on. The core loop is exactly like the original Pokemon Gold - you explore towns, battle wild Pokemon, catch them, and challenge Gym Leaders. But because every creature's type has changed, the usual type chart knowledge won't help you here.

The game uses the same menu system as the original, with text in English. Your first step is to visit Professor Elm's lab in New Bark Town to pick your starter. Each starter has been given a new type combination, so don't rely on memories of the originals. The most important thing to learn is the new type matchups - you'll need to experiment or look up a reference online. Battles play out identically to vanilla Gold/Silver, but the strategic depth comes from figuring out each Pokemon's new strengths and weaknesses.

If you get stuck, remember that the game's map and events are unchanged. You still need to defeat eight Gym Leaders, foil Team Rocket, and eventually challenge the Pokemon League. The only difference is the Pokemon themselves. Save often using the in-game save feature (Enter -> Save) and don't hesitate to grind levels if a gym leader catches you off guard with a super-effective move you weren't expecting.
