Keitai Denjuu Telefang - Power Version (Japan)
Getting to Know Keitai Denjuu Telefang - Power Version (Japan)
Keitai Denjuu Telefang - Power Version is a monster-collecting RPG released for the Game Boy Color exclusively in Japan in the year 2000. It was developed and published by Smilesoft, a studio that specialized in creature-taming games. This is one of two versions - Power and Speed - that released simultaneously, each featuring a different set of Denjuu (digital animals) to catch and battle. The game is often compared to Pokémon due to its similar premise, but it has its own distinct flavor rooted in its mobile phone-inspired theme (keitai means cell phone in Japanese).
The core gameplay loop has you exploring a colorful world from a top-down perspective, encountering wild Denjuu that you can befriend and add to your collection. You use a device called a Denjuu Phone to call and communicate with your creatures, and turn-based battles happen when you meet wild Denjuu or rival trainers. The goal is to collect all 150+ Denjuu and become the best Tamer. Menus are entirely in Japanese, so a guide or familiarity with the language is helpful for navigating items and abilities.
For modern retro gamers, Telefang Power Version is a niche curiosity that offers a genuine monster-taming experience with a unique aesthetic. It's not as polished or deep as Pokémon Gold and Silver, but it has its own charm with the cell phone interface and unusual creature designs. If you enjoyed the GBC era of handheld RPGs and want something different from the mainstream, this is a solid pick - just be ready for the language barrier if you don't read Japanese.
How to Play Keitai Denjuu Telefang - Power Version (Japan) Online
Getting Started
Start a new game by pressing Enter (Start) on the title screen. You will be asked to name your character using a Japanese character set - if you cannot read it, you can press S (B) to skip or use a default name. The game opens with a brief cutscene and then you gain control in your hometown. The first thing to do is talk to the professor-like character to receive your first Denjuu (a Starter). Explore the town and surrounding areas to encounter wild Denjuu. Approach them and press X (A) to initiate battle. In battle, use the Denjuu you have to attack or try to befriend the enemy by using the Phone call option (select it from the battle menu with X and then choose a Denjuu to call). Winning fights earns experience and sometimes new Denjuu join you automatically. The core loop is: battle, collect, heal at the Denjuu Center, then move to the next area. Keep in mind the game is entirely in Japanese. Most menu options are predictable for RPG veterans: the first option usually confirms, the second cancels. Save your progress at any Denjuu Center by talking to the counter clerk and selecting the save option (the one that shows a disk icon or the word セーブ). Without saving, you will lose progress when you close the emulator.Keitai Denjuu Telefang - Power Version (Japan) Keyboard Controls
