Getting to Know Godzilla - The Series

Godzilla - The Series for Game Boy Color is a side-scrolling on-rails action game that ties into the animated TV show of the same name, which itself followed the 1998 American Godzilla film. It came out in North America and Europe around the turn of the millennium, though the exact release year isn't widely documented. The publisher and developer credits are also not consistently recorded. What is clear is that this is an official commercial release, not a hack or homebrew, and it plays in black-and-white on the original GBC hardware (or colorized on a GBC). You control Godzilla as he stomps through stages from a side-view perspective, moving forward along a fixed path. The on-rails structure means the screen scrolls automatically, and your job is to aim Godzilla's attacks at enemies - usually military units, tanks, and other monsters - while avoiding incoming fire. There are power-ups and health pickups scattered along the way, and levels end with a boss fight against a giant creature from the show. The game keeps a simple loop: move, shoot, survive, and move on. No branching paths or exploration, just pure arcade-style monster action. Today, this title is worth a look if you're a fan of the Godzilla franchise or curious about how TV-to-game adaptations were handled on the Game Boy Color. It doesn't reinvent the wheel - on-rails shooters were common on the system - but it does capture the feel of controlling a giant monster rampaging through cities. The pixel art is decent for the hardware, and the fact that it supports English, French, and German menus shows it had a wider European release. It's not a must-play classic, but it's a solid slice of late-90s licensed gaming that holds up for a quick session.

How to play Godzilla - The Series online

Let's get you started. When you first load the game, you'll see a title screen. Press Enter to start. You'll likely get a menu with options like "New Game" or "Continue". In the English version, this is straightforward. If for some reason you're using a different language variant, the layout is the same. You control Godzilla using the Arrow Keys to move up and down on the screen - remember, the game scrolls automatically from left to right. Use the A button (X on keyboard) to fire your main attack, and the B button (S) for a secondary move like a tail whip or a charge. There's no jump, so focus on positioning and timing your shots. The core loop is simple: move Godzilla to dodge incoming missiles and monsters, then blast everything in sight. Health is shown at the top, and you can refill it by picking up hearts that enemies sometimes drop. Each stage ends with a larger creature - like a giant bug or a robotic version of Godzilla - that requires you to hit its weak point while avoiding its attacks. If you lose all health, you get a few continues before it's game over. No save system is used here; the game relies on passwords or the standard GBC battery backup, but the exact method isn't widely documented. Just keep playing through each stage in one sitting if you can.

Godzilla - The Series FAQ

Is there anything iconic or memorable about Godzilla - The Series?

The game directly adapts the animated TV series, which itself is a spin-off of the 1998 American Godzilla movie. For fans of the show, seeing pixel-art versions of monsters like the giant spiders or the military vehicles brings back the 90s cartoon vibe. The on-rails side-scrolling format was typical for Game Boy Color action titles, but having Godzilla as the playable character in a licensed game of this era is a nice piece of retro gaming trivia.

Is Godzilla - The Series considered easy to pick up or challenging?

It's fairly easy to understand within the first few minutes - just move and shoot. The challenge ramps up as later stages throw faster enemies and tougher bosses at you. Most players can finish it in a sitting or two, but the last boss can be tricky without pattern memorization. It's not overly punishing, but you'll need to manage your health and power-ups carefully.

Can players save progress in Godzilla - The Series?

The save method for this specific release is not widely documented. Many Game Boy Color games used battery-backed saves or password systems. If you're playing via emulator, you can rely on save states instead.
