Bubble Bobble II

Bubble Bobble II is a 1994 arcade platformer from Taito, the sequel to the beloved Bubble Bobble. This particular version is labeled as Ver 2.6O, dated December 16, 1994, suggesting a specific revision or update to the original arcade release. It retains the colorful 2D graphics and charming character designs that made the series a staple in arcades worldwide, though it was only released in Japan initially. You control either Bub or Bob, the iconic dinosaur twins, through a series of vertically scrolling stages. The core mechanic remains the same as the original: blow bubbles to trap enemies, then pop them by jumping on or bumping into them. New elements include a larger world map with branching paths, power-ups like shoes for faster movement and candy that temporarily turns enemies into fruit for bonus points. The game also introduces boss fights at the end of each zone, requiring you to defeat them by dropping bubbles or using environmental hazards. For retro gamers, Bubble Bobble II offers a more refined and expanded take on the classic formula without losing the simple pick-up-and-play fun. The level design is varied, with hidden rooms and multiple exits adding replay value. While not as revolutionary as its predecessor, it stands as a solid arcade platformer with tight controls and a satisfying challenge. If you enjoyed the original, this sequel is well worth a playthrough, especially in its revised version form found here.
