Area 88 (Japan Resale ver.)
Area 88 (Japan Resale ver.) - Shooter Classic
Area 88 is a classic arcade shooter that dropped in 1989, developed and published by Capcom. Based on the manga and OVA of the same name, this vertical-scrolling plane shooter pits you against enemy forces in a fictional war zone. The Japan Resale ver. is a later reissue of the original arcade board, likely for the domestic market, with no significant gameplay changes from the standard release.
You pilot a fighter jet through scrolling stages, dodging and destroying waves of enemy aircraft, tanks, and ground installations. The game uses a standard eight-way joystick and two buttons for firing and using special weapons. Power-ups appear as you shoot down certain enemies, upgrading your main gun or granting bombs that clear the screen. The loop is straightforward: fly forward, blast everything, survive the boss at the end of each stage.
What makes Area 88 stand out is its faithful adaptation of the source material's gritty tone and the tight, responsive controls typical of Capcom's golden era shooters. Compared to contemporaries like 1942 or Twin Cobra, Area 88 offers a more methodical pace with a focus on positioning and weapon management. It's a solid pick for fans of classic vertical shooters, though the Japan-only release means menus are in Japanese. If you enjoy Capcom's earlier arcade work, this one is worth a few credits.
How to Play Area 88 (Japan Resale ver.) Online
Press Enter to start the game. On the title screen use Arrow Keys to move and X to confirm your selection. The game has a character select where you choose between three pilots each with a different starting weapon loadout - your choice affects how your main gun behaves. Once in the action, use Arrow Keys to move your plane and S to fire your main gun. Hold S for rapid fire. Press X to drop a bomb or use your special weapon if you have one.
The core loop is simple: shoot everything that moves, collect the floating P icons to power up your gun, and avoid taking hits. One hit loses a life. The game scrolls vertically automatically so you only need to dodge and aim. When you see a red flashing enemy, take it out for a weapon upgrade. Enemies often come from the sides of the screen so keep an eye on the edges. Menus are in Japanese but the character select is intuitive - just pick the middle option for a balanced loadout if you are unsure.
