Air Combat (AC2, US)
Air Combat (AC2, US) Overview
Air Combat (AC2, US) is an arcade flight combat game originally released by Namco in 1992. This is the US version, which features modified difficulty and enemy patterns compared to the Japanese original. You take the role of a fighter pilot in a fictional war, blasting through waves of enemy aircraft and ground targets. The cabinet used a unique yoke controller with force feedback, but here you're playing it through emulation on your keyboard. This is the same core experience that later inspired the Ace Combat series on home consoles.
Your objective in each mission is straightforward: destroy all enemy planes, tanks, and ships before they take you down. The view is a chase-cam behind your jet, and you control pitch, yaw, and throttle to chase targets. Lock onto enemies by putting them in your crosshairs and fire missiles or machine guns. The arcade format means levels are short and intense, with a constant stream of opponents. You have a limited number of lives and continues, so learning enemy patterns and using evasive maneuvers is key to surviving until the end. Watch your speed - stalling makes you an easy target, but going too fast can overshoot enemies.
This arcade version holds up as a pure skill-based shooter that rewards quick reflexes and pattern recognition. It lacks the story depth of later Ace Combat games but delivers a raw, unfiltered combat experience. The US version is slightly more forgiving than the Japanese release, making it a better starting point for newcomers. If you enjoy arcade shooters or want to see where the beloved console series began, this is a fun, bite-sized challenge. It's not deep, but it does exactly what it sets out to do: put you in the cockpit and make you fight for your life.
How to Play Air Combat (AC2, US) Online
Getting Started: When you first load Air Combat (AC2, US), you'll see the title screen. Press Enter to start. The game will immediately throw you into the first mission with no menu - just a short briefing screen. Use the Arrow Keys to steer your plane: Up pitches down, Down pitches up, Left and Right roll. The default view is behind your jet; pressing Z engages afterburner for a speed boost, and A applies brakes to slow down. Your main weapon fires automatically when you press X, but you can also press S to launch a limited supply of homing missiles. The key is to keep enemies in your crosshairs and lead your shots.
Your core loop: fly forward, dodge incoming fire, shoot down every enemy that appears. The arcade design means you don't have to worry about fuel or landing - just survive each wave. If you lose all lives, you can continue by pressing Start (insert coin). The game ends when you run out of continues. To maximize score, chain kills quickly and avoid taking hits. The US version is slightly less punishing than the Japanese one, but you'll still need steady aim and quick reflexes. Focus on reading enemy movement first, then shoot.
