King of the Monsters 2 (USA)
King of the Monsters 2 (USA) on Genesis
King of the Monsters 2: The Next Thing is a side-scrolling beat 'em up that landed on the SEGA Genesis during the early 90s. Published by Takara Co., this USA version brings giant superheroes and equally giant villains to the 16-bit era. It's the sequel to the original King of the Monsters and follows the same over-the-top formula where you take control of hulking characters and smash through stages full of enemy monsters.
You pick one of several oversized fighters and move through city streets, industrial zones, and other locales. The core loop is straightforward: walk right, pound on enemies using punches, kicks, and special moves, and eventually face a massive boss at the end of each level. Your hero can also pick up objects like cars or debris to throw at opponents. The action is fast-paced but simple, relying on pattern recognition and careful timing against groups of foes.
It's a niche title even by Genesis beat 'em up standards, but fans of the genre or the original Neo Geo game will find some charm here. The giant character sprites and destructive environments give it a personality separate from more grounded brawlers. If you enjoy classic arcade-style mayhem with a kaiju twist, this one is worth a few credits.
How to Play King of the Monsters 2 (USA) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up the game, you'll see a title screen and then a character select where you choose one of the giant superheroes. Each fighter has similar basic moves but different special attacks and speed. After selecting, the first stage begins automatically.
The core goal is to clear each area of enemies and then defeat the stage boss. You move using the D-Pad and attack with the B button (S key). Jump with A (X key). Your hero can also pick up objects like barrels or cars by pressing the attack button near them, then throw them with another tap. Special moves are triggered by button combinations - experiment with direction plus attack or jump while attacking.
Health is shown as a bar at the top, and you have a limited number of continues. Each boss has a specific pattern that you'll learn after a few attempts. Take your time, watch for tells, and use the environment to your advantage. There is no timer, so you can play cautiously.
