Exile

Exile (USA) on Sega Genesis is a side‑scrolling action RPG and the sequel to XZR. It originally debuted on Japanese computers in 1988 before coming to North America in a heavily censored form. The Genesis version trimmed much of the religious, adult, and drug‑related content that made the original notorious. This is an official commercial release, not a hack or homebrew, though its English localization was significantly altered to meet U.S. standards at the time. You control a lone protagonist exploring horizontally scrolling levels, fighting enemies with weapons and magic while gathering experience and items. The core loop involves moving through connected stages, battling foes in real time, and managing your health and resources. Side‑scrolling action is mixed with light RPG elements like leveling up and inventory management, though the Genesis port simplifies some of the original computer game's more complex systems. Expect a focus on combat and platform navigation rather than heavy dialogue or puzzles. Its place in the Genesis library is as a curious piece of censorship history - few console action RPGs of the era tackled themes as dark as the original Exile, and seeing what was left after the edits is part of the draw. The gameplay is competent but not genre‑defining; it's worth trying if you're interested in obscure Genesis titles or want to see how a controversial Japanese computer game was toned down for a U.S. audience. It's a niche pick, but one with a story behind it.
