Super Cobra

Super Cobra Overview

Super Cobra is a horizontally scrolling shooter that originally hit arcades in 1981, developed and published by Konami. It runs on the same hardware as its predecessor Scramble, and this MSX 1 version brings the arcade experience home. The game is a direct port of the arcade original, so you're getting a faithful slice of early '80s shooter design on the MSX platform.

You pilot a helicopter through a series of caves and enemy-filled corridors, moving left to right. Your chopper can fire forward and also drop bombs below to hit ground targets. The screen scrolls automatically, and you need to dodge incoming fire, missiles, and walls while also keeping an eye on your fuel gauge. Occasional refueling stations appear, but they're often guarded. The game is divided into distinct stages with a boss at the end of each area, after which the landscape changes. It's a straightforward run-and-gun affair with no continues, so every life counts.

Super Cobra is a solid entry for fans of classic shooters. It's more refined than many earlier scrolling shooters, with better collision detection and more varied terrain. Compared to Scramble, it feels a bit faster and the helicopter controls more responsively. For MSX owners, this is one of the better early arcade ports - simple, challenging, and a good test of reflexes. It's not a long game, but the difficulty ramps quickly, giving it good replay value for high-score chasers.

How to Play Super Cobra Online

Pressing Start begins the game. The helicopter starts at the left side of the first stage and automatically moves to the right. Press X to fire forward and S to drop bombs below. Use the arrow keys to move up, down, forward, and backward (though backward movement is limited). The core loop is simple: fly through the stage, shoot enemies and obstacles, collect fuel from floating canisters, and avoid hitting walls. When you reach the end of a stage, a boss appears - usually a large structure or fortress that you must destroy to proceed. If you lose all lives, the game ends and you must start over from the beginning. There are no saves or passwords, so it's pure arcade endurance. Menus are in English on this version, so navigation is straightforward.
