Rally-X
Rally-X: MSX1 Arcade
Rally-X originally hit arcades in 1980, developed and published by Namco. This MSX 1 port brings that classic maze-chase action to home computers. It's an arcade game through and through, one of the earliest to feature bonus stages and a scrolling maze that moves with your car.
You drive a blue Formula One car through a winding, multi-directional maze. Your goal is to collect all the yellow flags while avoiding red enemy cars that pursue you relentlessly. Boulders block some paths and must be navigated around. You can lay down smoke screens to temporarily stun your pursuers, but that costs fuel - so you have to manage that resource carefully. The game throws bonus stages at you between rounds, a rare treat for its time.
Today Rally-X is a neat historical piece. It's not as complex or polished as later maze games, but its core loop is solid and addictive. The scrolling maze and smoke screen mechanic were innovative in 1980. If you enjoy early arcade chases like Pac-Man but want a different flavor and a bit more strategic depth, this MSX version is worth a few rounds.
How to Play Rally-X Online
When you start a game of Rally-X on MSX 1, you'll see a title screen and then the maze. Press Enter to start. Use the Arrow Keys to steer your blue car around the maze. Your objective is to collect all the yellow flags scattered around the scrolling maze. As you move, the camera follows you, revealing new areas.
The red enemy cars will chase you relentlessly. If they touch you, you lose a life. You have a smoke screen ability - press the B button (S key) to drop smoke behind you. This stuns enemy cars temporarily, but it consumes fuel. Your fuel gauge is shown on screen; if it runs out, you can't lay smoke and eventually you'll be stranded. Collect fuel cans in the maze to refill. Bonus stages appear after certain rounds, giving you a chance to earn extra points without enemies. The game loops until you run out of lives, so focus on collecting flags and staying ahead of the red cars.
