Professional Mahjong is a tile-based board game released for the MSX1 home computer during the early 1980s. Like many mahjong titles of the era, it was likely published in Japan by an obscure software house, though specific developer and publisher details are not well-documented today. The MSX1 platform, with its standardized hardware, hosted a variety of digital adaptations of traditional games, and this one aimed to simulate the classic four-player mahjong experience for solo play against computer opponents.

How to play Professional Mahjong online

Getting Started

Start by selecting a game mode from the title screen, which will be in Japanese if you are playing the original ROM. Use the arrow keys to navigate and press X (A button) to confirm your choice. The core loop involves drawing and discarding tiles to build a winning hand according to standard mahjong rules, typically riichi mahjong.

Pay attention to the computer players' discards and plan your hand accordingly. Press S (B button) to cancel a tile selection or pass on an action like declaring a win. The game may prompt you to declare riichi or call tiles from other players' discards using keyboard commands. Because the menus are untranslated, a basic understanding of Japanese mahjong terminology is helpful.
