Getting Started
When you launch the game, press Enter (Start) to begin. You control a spaceship that moves in four directions using the Arrow Keys. The core objective is to survive each level by shooting all enemies and avoiding collision with them or their projectiles. Use X to fire your weapon; you can hold the button for continuous fire in most versions.
Pay attention to power-up icons that appear after destroying certain enemies. These may upgrade your gun or provide temporary shields. The game scrolls automatically, so you must constantly move forward and react to new threats. There is no pause function built into the original, but the emulator may allow pausing via the Start button.
If you die, you typically restart from the beginning of the current stage. The difficulty ramps up quickly, so memorizing enemy patterns and positioning is key to making progress. This is a pure arcade-style experience with no save states or continues in the original code - but emulator save states can help if you want to practice.

Payload FAQ
Is there anything iconic or memorable about Payload?
Payload stands as an early example of side-scrolling shooters on the MSX, capturing the simplicity and challenge of pre-NES arcade action. Its straightforward design and obscure publisher make it a curiosity for collectors hunting for lesser-known MSX titles.
What type of game is Payload?
A side-scrolling shoot 'em up where you pilot a spacecraft through enemy-filled levels, shooting foes and collecting power-ups. The gameplay relies entirely on reflexes and pattern recognition, with no RPG or puzzle elements.
Is Payload exclusive to MSX 1 or did it appear on other systems?
Payload appears to have been released only for the MSX 1 platform. No ports or versions on other systems such as the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, or NES have been documented.
