Pastfinder
What is Pastfinder?
Pastfinder is a vertically scrolling shooter released in 1984 by Activision, designed by David Lubar. It originally landed on the Atari 8-bit computers and Commodore 64 before making its way to the MSX 1. On this Japanese home computer, the game retains the same arcade-style action that defined many early eighties shooters - fast-paced, relentless, and built for high-score chasing.
You pilot a ship through a scrolling tunnel, weaving between walls and blasting enemies that stream toward you. The core loop is straightforward: survive as long as possible by dodging obstacles, shooting anything that moves, and collecting the occasional power-up to strengthen your firepower. There is no complex story or branching paths - just pure, twitch-based action that demands quick reflexes and pattern recognition.
For MSX owners, Pastfinder offers a solid example of early arcade translation done right. It is not groundbreaking by modern standards, but it captures the addictive simplicity of the genre. If you appreciate classic shooters like River Raid or Space Invaders but want something a bit more mobile, this one is worth a few credits - just don't expect deep mechanics or variety.
How to Play Pastfinder Online
Getting started is simple: press Enter to start the game. Your ship appears at the bottom of a vertical tunnel, scrolling upward automatically. Use the Arrow Keys to move your ship left, right, up, and down within the playing area. Press S to fire your weapon at the oncoming enemies and obstacles. The goal is to survive as long as possible by dodging walls and shooting enemies before they collide with you.
The core loop is reaction-based. Enemies appear from the top and sides, often moving in patterns. Collect power-up icons (usually floating shapes) to upgrade your firepower, but be careful - some may be traps. There is no continue system typical of later shooters; once you lose all lives, it is game over. Focus on learning enemy patterns and remembering tunnel layouts to improve your score.
If you are new to retro shooters, start by focusing on movement rather than shooting everything. The tunnel walls are your biggest threat. Take a few runs just to get a feel for the ship's speed and hitbox. Pastfinder is forgiving in its first stage but ramps up quickly - expect to die often until you memorize the obstacles.
