King & Balloon
King & Balloon Overview
King & Balloon is a fixed shooter originally released in arcades by Namco in 1980. This particular version is an MSX 1 port that came out in Japan in 1984, bringing the arcade experience to home computers. It's one of the earliest games to feature speech synthesis, with the king shouting for help when grabbed by enemies. The game runs on hardware similar to Galaxian, so expect simple but crisp visuals and that classic early-80s Namco feel.
The player controls a cannon at the bottom of the screen, shooting upward at descending balloons. The goal is to protect the king, who stands at the top of the screen, from being kidnapped. Balloons come in waves, and some head straight for the king. If a balloon snatches him, you lose a life. The core loop is straightforward: shoot everything before they reach the king, but prioritize the ones closing in on him. There's no scrolling or power-ups, just pure aim-and-fire action with a single screen.
For retro enthusiasts, King & Balloon is a fun historical footnote. It's not as deep or polished as later shooters, but it's a great example of early arcade design and technical novelty - especially the speech. The MSX version is a faithful port, so it's a quick, satisfying play session. If you liked Galaxian or Space Invaders, this offers a similar pick-up-and-play challenge with a unique twist. Don't expect complexity, but do expect a solid dose of arcade nostalgia.
How to Play King & Balloon Online
Getting Started: When you start King & Balloon on MSX 1, you'll see a title screen in Japanese. Press Enter to begin. The game immediately drops you into action: you control a cannon at the bottom, moving left and right with the arrow keys. Your only weapon is the attack button (S). Balloons descend from the top, and some will try to grab the king standing there. Your main goal is to shoot the balloons before they reach him. If the king is snatched, you lose a life. The game ends when all lives are gone.
The core loop is simple: each wave of balloons appears, you shoot them down, and then the next wave arrives. There's no level progression or boss fights - just an escalating number of balloons and speed. New players should focus on the balloons closest to the king first. The speech synthesis kicks in when the king is grabbed, so you'll hear a distinct voice. Because this is a Japanese port, menus are in Japanese, but the gameplay is intuitive enough that you don't need to read them. Just shoot and survive.
