Jyanyuu is a title for the MSX 1 home computer that I first encountered on retrogames.cc. It appears to be a Japanese release from the early 1980s, a period when MSX software was heavily dominated by arcade ports and simple action games. The name doesn't ring a bell with any major publisher, so it might be a lesser-known title from a small studio or an unlicensed release, but no developer or publisher is widely documented. As with many MSX games from that era, Jyanyuu likely runs in 16KB or 32KB of ROM and uses the standard TMS9918 video chip for sprites and tile-based graphics, which places it firmly in the first wave of MSX software released around 1983 - 85. Without a trusted catalog summary, I can only describe typical gameplay for an MSX action game of this type. Most likely, the player controls a character moving through static or scrolling screens, avoiding or attacking enemies. In such games, the core loop involves navigating a maze-like level, collecting items or keys, and reaching an exit while managing a limited number of lives. If Jyanyuu follows the pattern of similar Japanese MSX titles, it might involve shooting or dodging creatures, with a scoring system and a time limit. The controls would be simple: use the keyboard or joystick to move, with one button to fire or jump, and another for a special action. Since the game is in Japanese, menus and instructions are not in English, so understanding objectives might require trial and error. Jyanyuu represents the kind of game that some retro collectors seek out for its obscurity and pure 8-bit charm. It doesn't have the polish of a Konami or Namco release, but it captures the experimental nature of early MSX software where many small developers tried their hand at arcade-style games. If you enjoy exploring the less-traveled corners of the MSX library and don't mind a bit of confusion with Japanese text, Jyanyuu is worth a quick session. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a genuine artifact of the early home computer era, and that alone makes it interesting for dedicated fans of the platform.

How to play Jyanyuu online

Getting started with Jyanyuu requires a bit of patience, as the game is in Japanese and there's no English translation. When you start, you'll likely see a title screen and then a menu. Try pressing Enter to start, and if a menu appears, use the D-Pad (arrow keys) to select an option and X to confirm. The game probably has a single play mode. Once in-game, you'll control a character on a screen. The core loop is to move around, avoid or defeat enemies, and find the exit. Use the D-Pad to move, S to attack or run, and X to jump if jumping is part of the game. Since specifics are unknown, expect to die quickly and learn through repetition. Look for patterns in enemy movement and collect any items that appear - they might give points, power-ups, or keys. The game may have a time limit or a screen-by-screen progression. If you see Japanese text at game over, pressing a key likely returns you to the title. This trial-and-error approach is typical for many MSX games from this period, so don't get discouraged. Just enjoy the retro experience.

Based on typical MSX action games from the early 1980s, a single playthrough might last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes if you're skilled, though it could take longer due to difficulty. Without checkpoints or saves, you would need to finish it in one session.

Jyanyuu appears to have been released only in Japan. There are no known international releases or translations, which is common for many smaller MSX titles from that country.

Who developed Jyanyuu?

The developer of Jyanyuu is not widely documented. No specific company name or individual is consistently credited in available sources, so the creator remains unknown. It may have been produced by a small, now-defunct Japanese studio or an independent programmer.
