Formation Z
Formation Z on MSX1
Formation Z is a horizontally scrolling shooter that originally hit arcades in 1984, developed and published by Jaleco. In North America, it was released by Williams Electronics under the name Aeroboto. The MSX 1 port brought the arcade experience to home computers, letting players enjoy the same fast-paced action on a more accessible platform. As a shooter from the mid-80s, it fits right alongside contemporaries like Gradius and R-Type, though with its own distinct visual style and transforming robot gimmick.
How to Play Formation Z Online
Getting Started
Drop into Formation Z and you are immediately controlling a robot fighter that scrolls horizontally across alien-infested terrain. The core loop is simple: dodge enemy fire, shoot down waves of foes, and grab power-ups that upgrade your weapon or add a protective barrier. There is no complex story to follow - just pure arcade shooting from left to right.
The MSX port retains the original arcade feel but runs at a slightly lower resolution. Menus are in Japanese, but you only need to press Start to begin the game. Your robot can transform between two forms: a humanoid shape for ground combat and a jet mode for faster movement in the air. Experiment with both to handle different enemy patterns and narrow passages.
New players should focus on learning enemy spawn points and conserving power-ups for tougher sections. The game is short but challenging, with a loop-based structure that repeats with increased difficulty. Practice the first few stages to master the rhythm of dodging and shooting.
