What is Computer Billiards?
Computer Billiards is an early MSX1 title that brings the classic game of pool to the platform. Released sometime in the 1980s, likely for the Japanese market, its developer and publisher are not widely documented today. Like many early home computer sports simulations, it aimed to translate the feel of real billiards into a simple, playable format for the MSX's eight-bit hardware.
The player takes control of the cue ball, aiming and adjusting the power of each shot to pot solid or striped balls into the table's pockets. Typical billiards rules apply: you must pocket one set of balls before sinking the eight ball, with fouls penalizing the player. The game presents a top-down view of the table, with rudimentary physics that replicate ball collisions and cushion bounces. A turn-based structure means you play against the computer or a second human opponent.
As a very early attempt at digital billiards, Computer Billiards feels primitive next to later pool games but remains an interesting relic for MSX collectors and retro sports fans. Its simplicity makes it easy to pick up for a quick game, and it showcases how developers adapted real-world sports to limited hardware. Compared to more polished MSX sports titles, this one is niche and basic, but it has a charm that appeals to those curious about the dawn of home computer gaming.
How to Play Computer Billiards Online
Getting Started
When the game boots, you will likely see a title screen and a prompt to press Start (Enter). This may present a menu with options for one or two players, though the language is Japanese. If you see text you cannot read, pressing Start repeatedly often begins a single-player match. The game will set up a pool table with balls arranged in a triangle rack at one end.
Your goal is to pocket your set of balls (solids or stripes) and then sink the eight ball. Use the D-Pad (Arrow Keys) to position the cue aim around the cue ball. Press the B button (S) to set power, and then press the A button (X) to shoot. The exact controls for aiming and power might differ; experiment with pressing different buttons to adjust angle. If you foul, control passes to the opponent (computer or second player).
The core loop is simple: line up your shot, adjust power, strike, and wait for the balls to settle. There are typically no complicated menus or upgrades. Just play pool as you would in real life, but with digital physics. If you are new to the game, start by playing against the computer to get a feel for the table layout and how the balls react.
