Comet Tail
About Comet Tail
You control a small ship or character at the bottom of the screen, moving left and right to avoid incoming obstacles or enemies. The core loop is straightforward: survive as long as possible while shooting or dodging whatever comes at you from above. Points accumulate for each enemy destroyed or obstacle cleared, with difficulty ramping up as the game progresses. There isn't a deep mechanic - it's a pure test of reflexes and pattern recognition, typical for early console shooters.
Comet Tail occupies a small corner of the MSX 1 library, sitting alongside other simple arcade-style games that filled out the system's early software catalog. It's not a landmark title or a technical showcase, but that raw, unpolished feel is exactly what draws many retro gamers to these obscure releases. If you enjoy no-frills shooters from the dawn of home gaming, Comet Tail is worth a few minutes of your time - just don't expect hidden depths.
How to Play Comet Tail Online
Getting Started
Comet Tail loads directly into gameplay with no title screen or menu - at least in the version available on retrogames.cc. You'll see your ship at the bottom of the screen and enemies immediately start appearing from above. Use the Arrow Keys to move left and right, and press the B button (S key) to fire your weapon. The primary goal is to shoot down enemy ships while avoiding their attacks and any debris that scrolls down the screen.
There are no power-ups or complex systems to learn. You have a limited number of lives, and losing all of them ends the game. The challenge comes from increasingly fast and dense enemy patterns. If you've played any basic vertical shooter from the early 80s, you'll feel right at home. If this is a Japanese-only release, the only text you might encounter is the score display, which uses numbers - no language barrier to worry about.
