Chack'n Pop
Chack'n Pop on MSX1
Chack'n Pop is a 1984 arcade platformer from Taito, later ported to the MSX 1 home computer. It came out in Japan during the golden age of arcade conversions, when companies scrambled to bring their coin-op hits to living rooms. Taito handled both development and publishing, and the game is often remembered as a spiritual forerunner to Bubble Bobble, sharing similar characters and a focus on screen-clearing action.
The player controls a round, cute creature named Chack'n who must navigate single-screen stages by jumping across platforms and avoiding enemies. The goal is to collect all the hearts or other items on the stage while dodging or trapping foes. Touching an enemy costs a life, and the player can drop bombs to stun or defeat them. Each stage resets the enemy patterns, demanding quick reflexes and pattern recognition rather than exploration.
Today, Chack'n Pop holds interest as a historical link between Taito's earlier arcade experiments and the wildly popular Bubble Bobble series. On the MSX 1, it's a competent port that captures the original's pick-up-and-play feel, though it lacks the polish of later titles. If you enjoy early-80s arcade platformers with simple controls and tight stage design, this is worth a few rounds. Just don't expect depth - its charm is pure, straightforward retro fun.
How to Play Chack'n Pop Online
Start by pressing Enter to begin the game. You control Chack'n as it moves left and right across platforms. Press X to jump and S to drop a bomb or perform a special action. The core loop is simple: explore each screen, collect all the sparkling items, and avoid or neutralize the wandering enemies. If you get touched, you lose a life - but you can drop bombs to stun enemies temporarily.
Since this is the Japanese MSX release, the menus and on-screen text are entirely in Japanese. The title screen shows a copyright notice and a start prompt; just press Enter to jump into the action. There are no continue options or save states - the game is a classic arcade-style run with limited lives. Spend your first few attempts memorizing enemy movement patterns and bomb timing. Dying often is part of the learning curve.
