Bomberman Special
Bomberman Special: MSX1 Action
Bomberman Special is a classic maze-action game released for the MSX 1 home computer. Originally published by Hudson Soft in 1986, it's a stand-alone entry in the Bomberman series, not a port or hack. The Japanese release (and likely the only official version) brings the familiar bomb-dropping formula to the MSX platform, a system known for its colorful sprite work and tight controls. If you've played the NES classic, this MSX version feels like a close cousin - same core idea, but tuned for the computer's keyboard and limited graphics.
How to Play Bomberman Special Online
Getting Started
When you boot up Bomberman Special, you'll see a title screen with Japanese text. Press Enter to start the game. Your goal in each level is to place bombs that destroy soft blocks and defeat enemies, then find the exit door hidden under one of the blocks. The core loop is straightforward: move with the arrow keys, drop bombs with the S button (B button mapping), and avoid being caught in your own explosions or touched by roaming enemies.
As you clear stages, you'll collect power-ups like extra bombs, increased blast range, and speed boosts. These appear when you destroy certain soft blocks. Timing is critical - bombs explode after a few seconds, and you need to be far enough away to survive. The game is entirely single-player; there's no multiplayer mode in this MSX1 release. Since menus are in Japanese, remember that the first option on the title screen is usually "Start Game" and the second is probably "High Score" or "Options." Stick to the basic gameplay loop and you'll quickly get the hang of it.
