Top Gear Pocket 2 (USA)
Top Gear Pocket 2 (USA) - Racing Classic
Top Gear Pocket 2 (also known as Top Gear Rally 2 in Europe) is a racing game for the Game Boy Color, developed and published by Kemco. It came out in Japan in late 1999, then hit the US and other regions in 2000 as a sequel to the original Top Gear Pocket. This is an official cartridge release, not a hack or homebrew, and it fits squarely into the handheld racing scene of the late '90s, when developers were squeezing respectable driving experiences out of the little grayscale-turned-color screen.
You pick a car from a small roster, select a track, and race against a handful of AI opponents. The goal is to place first over several laps, using the D-Pad to steer and the A and B buttons for accelerate and brake. The game features multiple modes, including a championship where you earn points across a series of races. There is also a time trial mode for solo practice. On the original hardware, two players could link up for head-to-head racing via the Game Boy Color link cable, a common feature for racing titles of that generation.
For retro racing fans, this is a solid, if straightforward, entry in the GBC library. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but the colorful top-down perspective and responsive controls make it a pleasant playthrough. Compared to other GBC racers like F-1 World Grand Prix or Ridge Racer, it holds its own with decent sprite work and a catchy soundtrack. If you enjoyed the first Top Gear Pocket or just want a portable racing fix from the early 2000s, this is worth a spin.
