Game Boy Wars 2

Game Boy Wars 2 is a turn-based strategy title for the Game Boy Color, released exclusively in Japan in 1998. It belongs to the long-running Nintendo Wars series, which started on the Famicom and eventually inspired the Western Advance Wars games. Intelligent Systems developed the game, with Nintendo handling publishing duties. This entry arrived during the early days of the Game Boy Color, taking advantage of the system's color palette and slightly faster processor to deliver a more detailed war game experience than its black-and-white predecessor. Players command a small army on grid-based battlefields, moving units like infantry, tanks, and artillery to capture enemy bases and defeat opposing forces. Each turn consists of giving movement and attack orders to every unit before ending the phase, at which point the computer opponent or a second player takes their turn. Terrain affects movement and defense, so positioning matters a great deal. The game includes multiple maps and a campaign mode where victory unlocks new scenarios. Because this is Japan-only, all menus and unit names are in Japanese, which can be a hurdle for non-readers but the core mechanics are intuitive enough to learn through trial and error. For strategy fans, Game Boy Wars 2 is an interesting snapshot of the Wars series before it gained international fame. It offers a purer, more traditional take on turn-based warfare compared to the later Advance Wars games, which added more story and character-driven campaigns. The Game Boy Color library is short on full-fledged strategy games, so this niche title stands as a worthwhile challenge for collectors and anyone curious about the roots of the series. Just be prepared for the language barrier and the slower pace typical of 1990s handheld strategy games.
